Every other week someone asks us whether to buy an air-cooled or water-cooled spindle, and the answer usually surprises them: it is not about the machine, it is about how long the spindle works without a break. A router that cuts for twenty minutes and pauses while the operator changes parts is a different problem from a production line that runs the same cycle all shift.
The short version is that both are the same CNC spindle inside - the difference is where the heat goes, and how much of it you are willing to hear.
Air-cooled or water-cooled?
Air-cooled
Self-contained, no pump, no hoses, no water to forget. Fine up to roughly 3 kW and for intermittent work. The fan is the price you pay - at 18,000 rpm it is loud enough that some shops build enclosures around it.
Water-cooled
Quieter, and the cooling is dramatically better - water holds heat away from the windings, so a 3.5 kW water-cooled spindle can run all day while an air-cooled one of the same power would be over temperature by lunch. Needs a chiller or a reservoir, which is one more thing to maintain.
Numbers make it concrete. A water-cooled spindle motor running at rated load typically holds a temperature rise of 15-20°C above ambient with the recommended flow of 3-5 L/min. An air-cooled spindle of the same power class will sit 40°C or more above ambient at continuous load. Bearings are rated for it, but every 10°C you shave off the housing roughly doubles the grease life in the bearings. That is the real argument for water - not the noise, the bearing life.
The mistakes we see are mostly about setup, not the spindle itself. Adding a shop-air hose to an air-cooled spindle and calling it water cooling - it does not work, the airflow path is not designed for it. Running a water-cooled spindle on tap water without a chiller - it works for a while, then the water gets warm, then the spindle gets warm, then the bearings get loud. And the classic one: buying a water-cooled spindle and never plumbing it at all, because the machine builder "did not get to it yet". A water-cooled spindle run dry overheats in under an hour.
Which one should you take? If your spindle runs for minutes at a time with pauses - air-cooled is simpler and cheaper to run. If it runs for hours, or you cut materials that punish the tool at high rpm - water-cooled pays for itself in bearing life and quieter work.
