DFU Ball Screw — Double Nut, Rolled, C7 | HLTNC
What the designation tells you
The catalogue's nominal code is built from four parts, so the size is readable straight off the model number: SFU 16 05 * 500 - SFU = series and nut type, 16 = screw outer diameter (mm), 05 = pitch, i.e. lead (mm), 500 = total length (mm). The suffix after the lead is the number of circuits in the nut - a DFU1605-3 has 3 circuits, a DFU3205-3 also 3.
SFU ball screws - single nut
SFU is the standard rolled series: a single nut with a return tube, for shaft diameters 12 to 80 mm. It covers the ordinary positioning duties - routers, general automation, laser and plasma cutting, 3D printers.

Load ratings in this table are given in kN, as printed in the manufacturer catalogue page 25.

Rolled or ground: choose the accuracy grade first
The same screw body is available rolled (C7, 0.05 mm per 300 mm) or ground (C3, 0.001 mm per 300 mm). If you are not sure which you need, send us the positioning tolerance the machine has to hold and the grade follows from that.
What is inside the nut
- Nut body - carries the load and bolts to your carriage
- Dust ring - wipes the screw to keep chips out
- GCR15 steel balls - the rolling elements
- Circular reverser (return tube) or waist reverser - returns the balls from the end of the circuit to the start
- Rubber sealed loop and PTFE sealing ring - keep lubrication in and dust out
Shaft end machining
A ball screw cannot simply be bolted in: the shaft ends are turned to take the bearing and the coupling. We machine the ends to your drawing - journal diameter, thread, keyway and shoulder positions. Send the shaft end drawing or the original part number and we will match it.
Frequently asked questions
What does the number after the lead mean? The number of circuits in the nut. SFU1605-4 has one more circuit than SFU1605-3, so it carries more load in the same nut body: 8 kN dynamic against 7.65 kN at 16 mm diameter.
Is ground worth the extra cost? Only if the machine has to hold position to a few microns. For a router or a general automation axis, C7 is not the limiting factor.
Can I replace an old screw without redesigning the axis? Yes. Send the original part number, or measure shaft diameter, lead and total length - model, mounting dimensions and end machining are all reproduced from those.

Send the part number, the total length and the accuracy grade - or the drawing of the screw you are replacing. If you are not sure which series fits, describe the axis and we will work it out.
