The smallest frame in the range, and what that costs

Nothing here is hidden: this is the entry frame, and the trade-offs show up in the numbers. Body length is 55 mm in the single-stage build and 66 mm with two stages, against 110 and 132 mm on the 90 mm frame. Weight is 0.25 kg against 1.6 kg. What you pay for the small size is accuracy and efficiency: backlash is ≤25 arcmin on the single-stage unit rather than the ≤10 arcmin of the larger frames, and full load efficiency is 90% rather than 96%.

Ratios available in each of the two builds

The 42 mm frame carries a deliberately short ratio list. Three options per build, and nothing in between - if you need 16:1 or 70:1, that is the larger frame.

Mating a 42 mm stepper motor

The input specification is Ø5-10 / Ø22-2 / F31-M3. In plain terms: a Ø5 mm motor shaft 10 mm long, a Ø22 mm pilot seated 2 mm deep, and M3 screws. The drawing gives the matching bolt spacing as 31 ±0.1 mm on a 42 mm square - the pattern the industry lists as NEMA 17, and the one used by the 42 mm standard stepper the unit is photographed with. Coupling on the motor side is a clamp type. Because the number of small stepper axes in the field is large, this frame is also the one most often asked for as a nema gearbox or a nema 17 stepper motor gearbox; the three input figures above are what decide whether a given motor will fit.

Where a 42 mm gearbox is the right answer

This frame suits an axis that is small, light and has to move quickly rather than push hard. Four applications appear in the material: 3D printing, CNC machining, textile machinery and cutting. On a printer gantry, or on a cutting head that changes direction often, the 0.25 kg body is the point: a heavier reducer needs a heavier axis to carry it, and the stepper turning it already has torque to spare. Where the load grows past 10 N·m, or the ≤25 arcmin grade stops being tight enough, move up to the 60 mm or 90 mm frame rather than pushing this one.

Label, packing and how to specify

Read the label this way: FLE42-05SW is a 42 mm frame, single stage, ratio 5. The serial number sits on the same nameplate, which is how the ratio and motor nose a unit was actually built to can be checked later. Each gearbox ships in its own carton with EPE foam. To quote, send the ratio, the build (L1 or L2), and the motor shaft diameter with its bolt pattern.
