HPS90MB Planetary Gearbox For NEMA34 Stepper Motors
The HPS90MB is the NEMA34 stepper version of the HPS90 planetary gearbox. Its input flange is machined to 69.6 mm square with a 14 mm bore, so it bolts straight onto a standard NEMA34 frame instead of needing an adapter plate. Ratios run 4:1 to 70:1 and rated output torque reaches 100 N·m, which is what lets a stepper hold a heavy axis without losing steps. Single-stage units are 110 mm long and weigh 2.9 kg; two-stage units are 132.5 mm and 3.7 kg.
How to pick the size for your stepper axis
Steppers lose torque as they speed up, which is why the gearbox is here
A stepper that holds 3 N·m at standstill may deliver a fraction of that at 600 rpm. The gearbox moves the working point back down the curve: fit a 10:1 and the motor turns ten times faster for the same axis speed, where it still has torque to give. Read the table below for the torque the gearbox itself is rated to carry.
Check the input flange is the MB, not the MA
MB takes NEMA34: ⌀14-40 input, ⌀73-3 stop, F69.6-M5, on a 69.6 mm square input flange with 4 × M6 x 12 threads. MA is the servo version and will not fit your motor. If you already run a servo, the MA page is the one you want.
Torque does not climb steadily with ratio
The 4:1 unit is rated 80 N·m, the 5:1 is 90, the 7:1 only 60 and the 10:1 just 39. Two-stage units then run 90–100 N·m. Pick the model whose rated torque clears your load rather than the ratio that sounds right.
Single stage is the tighter of the two
Backlash is 10 arcmin on L1 and 15 arcmin on L2, and L2 is 22.5 mm longer and 0.8 kg heavier. If your axis needs the least lost motion and 10:1 is enough ratio, stay single-stage.
Model, ratio and rated output torque
Single-stage units (L1, 110 mm body, backlash ≤ 10 arcmin, 2.9 kg):
| Model | Ratio | Rated output torque (N·m) |
|---|---|---|
| HPS90-04MB | 4:1 | 80 |
| HPS90-05MB | 5:1 | 90 |
| HPS90-07MB | 7:1 | 60 |
| HPS90-010MB | 10:1 | 39 |
Two-stage units (L2, 132.5 mm body, backlash ≤ 15 arcmin, 3.7 kg):
| Model | Ratio | Rated output torque (N·m) |
|---|---|---|
| HPS90-016MB | 16:1 | 90 |
| HPS90-020MB | 20:1 | 90 |
| HPS90-025MB | 25:1 | 100 |
| HPS90-028MB | 28:1 | 90 |
| HPS90-035MB | 35:1 | 100 |
| HPS90-040MB | 40:1 | 90 |
| HPS90-050MB | 50:1 | 100 |
| HPS90-070MB | 70:1 | 70 |

Reading the model code
Take HPS90-025MB: HPS90 frame, MB stepper input, ratio 25:1 - a two-stage unit, so the body is 132.5 mm and the rating is 100 N·m. The letter pair matters more than the number: MA and MB share the frame, the output end and the ratio table, and differ only in the input flange and bore. If the motor on your bench has a 14 mm shaft and an 86 mm frame, it is MB.
Where this gearbox is used
NEMA34 stepper axes show up on router and plasma gantries, pick-and-place heads, indexing tables, filament and wire feeders, and desktop CNC conversions. The common thread is a builder who already has the motor and needs it to move more load than it can hold directly.
Order with it: the motor you have, plus a coupling or clamp for the output shaft. Send the motor model or drawing and we confirm the input variant before the order is released. Running a servo instead? See the HPS90MA planetary gearbox on the same frame.
Quality control you can verify
- ▪Each unit is labelled with frame, stage count and ratio, so what arrives can be checked against the order line.
- ▪Backlash is held to 10 arcmin on single-stage and 15 arcmin on two-stage units — ask for the figure measured on your batch if the axis is sensitive.
- ▪The published radial and axial limits (1,000 N and 800 N) let you catch an overhung pulley or a tight belt drive on paper, before it becomes a warranty return.
- ▪Packed one unit per box, wrapped in EPE, with the label facing out for inspection on arrival.
